Open School Education 2030 was the theme of a foresight exercise convened by the European Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) in Seville at the end of May 2013. During two days, nearly thirty education professionals from around Europe explored a number of scenarios for possible futures, from total openness to a combination of openness and prescribed settings (link) — e.g. replacing textbooks with Open Education Resources while keeping 'traditional' teaching methods.

The current reflection on openness seems to be driven by two main topics:

  • Content: how to provide open access to learning resources — e.g. Open Educational Resources (OER)
  • Context: how to provide open access to learning opportunities — e.g. Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC)

To these topics, the group I worked with suggested adding:

  • People: how to recognise learners as learning resources, co-constructors of learning contents and contexts?

In search of a name for the scenarios we were about to design, one of the participants suggested OpenMe! I was of course delighted as it was the theme chosen for ePIC 2013. As I woke up early on the second day of the workshop, I decided to prepare a scenario entitled: OpenMe and GOD. As the title of the presentation was being displayed on the screens, I could sense a mixture of disbelief and a pinch of panic: had I experienced sudden spiritual enlightenment or was I the victim of substance abuse?

They were quickly reassured (or not) when they discovered that GOD was the acronym for Global Open Data. The presentation told the story of Leila Sharif who, in 2040, was invited to Seville to present her experience with open, de-schooled education.

Everything started when I was 13: coming back from Egypt, I wrote to my friend Pi: "now I know, I want to be an archeologist." Thanks to GOD and the millions of deamons* constantly analysing our personal data, the information "I want to become an archeologist" was retrieved by the relationships deamon who identified a number of people around me with similar interests and notified them that someone (I was 13, so it had to be anonymous) wanted to become an archeologist. The event deamon identified a number of archeology-related events, and among them, a future exploration campaign on a site of Merovingian burials located at 30km from where I lived. I also received a series of reports on previous local archeological campaigns, special offers for archeology books, a list of books at the local library, the description of possible learning paths to become an archeologist (looking at the actual profile of archeologists, not just the official academic curriculum), a list of competencies I would need to grow, and many more pieces of information and recommendations.

All this information was organised by Socrates, my personal digital butler, putting forward a list of potential mentors I could contact to make sense of all the information received and help me decide how to best move forward.

As I was 13 and my parents were still worried about GOD (it was a time before the European Parliament decided to print in GOD we trust on Euro banknotes), they asked one of their best friends (she was tech savvy too) to be my GOD parent. Edna, My GOD parent, checked out the credentials of the potential mentors and we discussed which one(s) would be best for me. Edna also helped me to manage the many requests for support in mathematics I regularly received (I was already rather good at it!)  [...]

I will stop relating the OpenMe and GOD scenario at this point. If you are interested to know more, as I suggested to my colleagues in Sevilla, either come back in 2040 (but check with the IPTS first!) or join us at ePIC 2013 where I'll explore further how OpenMe and GOD could help us create a truly open learning society. You can also reflect on the following questions:

  • Should we not be more attentive to what each individual member of a learning community can contribute to the common good?
  • Should we not expand the imperative learning to learn to learning to teach and support the members of one's learning community?

One of the main ideas behind OpenMe is about moving the learners from the right side of the balance sheet (costs) to the left side (assets), considering learners as educational resources not just empty vessels waiting to be filled-in (even with OERs!).

As a member of many different learning communities and a member of society, I felt encouraged to contribute to the best of my abilities. I did so in relation to my talents and aspirations. Being part of a contributive culture, where you can give as much as you receive, increased my self-esteem and my sense of identity and social responsibility. My portfolio was not just a place to collect artefacts and reflections to please my teachers or my grandmother, it was, and still is, a knowledge repository that I share with many. When I displayed my first Open Badges, my audience was not just my teachers nor hypothetical future employers (I have been self-employed since I was 16!). Not only, did Open Badges make it possible for Mentor Agents to connect me with learners in need, they also created opportunities to become involved in community projects where I could exploit and develop my talents.

And all this was made possible, thanks to GOD!

Monday 8 July, the first day of the conference is dedicated to workshops. One series of workshops is organised in partnership with the Mozilla Foundation and dedicated to Open Badges (c.f. below the description), while the other will be lead by Helen Barrett, exploring how mobile devices can be used to support ePortfolios, reflections and story telling. There will be two keynote speakers:

  • Kirstie Donnelly MBE, City & Guilds Group Director of Product Development
  • Philipp S. Mueller, Dean of the Business School (SMBS) of University of Salzburg, Austria, author of ""

The second and third day are dedicated to presentations with speakers from all over the world (from Japan and Australia, to the USA and Canada and many in between!). Presentations will range from Using Open Badges to Motivate and Recognise Patient Education and Achievements in Long Term Chronic Condition Self-Management to Facilitating the acquisition of a social work professional identity with e-portfolio.
 Keynote addresses will be:

  •  What would Marcel Proust have done with an e-Portfolio?, Alan Davis, President and Vice-Chancellor, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Canada
  • Virtual worlds as expanded spaces of self-authoring: a dialogical perspective, Russel Francis, University of Gothenburg, Sweden

After a series of additional presentations such as Looking Forward: Moving from Capstone to Springboard with Eportfolios to ePortfolio Systems for Self-directed Language Learning in Higher Education, the third day will welcome the first public meeting of Europortfolio. Wednesday keynotes are:

  • Linking up Innovations in Assessment: Eportfolios, Open Badges, and Learning analytics, Darren Cambridge, American Institutes for Research, USA
  • OpenMe and GOD: a story of Open ePortfolios Open Badges and Open Trust, Serge Ravet, ADPIOS, Europortfolio.

The Song Is YouSocial Dinner

Tuesday 9 July 2013, the participants will meet at the 606 Club for a fabulous evening with Victoria Newton and her musicians, Paul Booth on saxophone and Tim Lapthorn at the piano. They will set the stage alight with their irresistible mix of sexy jazz standards, beguiling Bossa Novas and get-on-down groove!  Vicki, a native Australian, has a powerful voice and outgoing personality, described by The Guardian as “..accomplished…deft and supple..a jazz singer a cut above the crowd”.  Her first love is Jazz and Brazilian music, which has been effectively captured on her album “The Song is You”, released on Discovery Records to great acclaim.


Open Badge Workshop at ePIC 2013


Monday 8 July: The Open Badge Challenge, a series of hands-on workshops provided by Doug Belshaw (Mozilla Open Badges) with the support of Eric Rousselle (Discendum Oy, Finland) and Rob Arntsen (MyKnowledgeMap, UK).

The workshop is organised around 3 main activities:

  • Create your Open Badge
  • Design your Open Badge System
  • Join the Open Badge Infrastructure

The following programme will be adjusted according to the needs of the participants.

Create your Open Badge

The objective of this session is to respond to the questions: what is an Open Badge made of? What do I need to create an Open Badge?

During this session you will have the opportunity to create your own badge as a Delegate or Presenter at ePIC 2013. Many different options will be explored, using a variety of resources.

Design your Open Badge System

The objective of this session is to respond to the question: who are the people, resources and processes I need to make Open Badges work in an organisation?

During this session, we will start by eliciting the particular needs of your institution then work together at establishing the main elements of your Open Badges deployment: evidence, criteria, audience (earner, issuer), backpack etc.

Join the Open Badge Infrastructure

The objective of this session is to respond to the questions: how can I make my Open Badge System visible and exploitable beyond the boundaries of of my organisation.

During this session we will explore the current options and challenges we need to take into account to establish a seamless Open Badges Infrastructure.

Europortfolio First General Meeting: 10 July 2013, London

On July 10, the last day of ePIC 2013, at the IET from 3pm to 5:30 pm, you are invited to participate in the first Europortfolio General Meeting. It will give you the opportunity to contribute to the launch of a major initiative that should advance the transformation of the 21st century learning landscape.

During the Europortfolio General Meeting you will have a chance to:

  • Review the initial outcomes of the Europortfolio initiative;
  • Discuss the foundations of Europortfolio (goals, charter, statutes, etc.);
  • Plan future actions, initiatives and projects;
  • Join the Steering Committee that will take responsibility for the process of establishing Europortfolio as a not-for-profit organisation;
  • Become a National Coordinator.

The meeting will be closed by a cocktail offered by Europortfolio at 4:30pm.





The goal of Europortfolio is to empower individuals as reflective learners and practitioners, organisations as environments for authentic learning and assessment, and society as a context for lifelong learning, employability and self-realisation

Europortfolio Charter

The aim of the Europortfolio Charter is to set out the principles and guidelines that will govern the co-operation of the Parties hereto concerning the creation of Europortfolio as a not-for-profit organisation. 


The goal of Europortfolio is to empower individuals as reflective learners and practitioners, organisations as environments for authentic learning and assessment, and society as a context for lifelong learning, employability and self-realisation.


To achieve its goal, the mission of Europortfolio is to support and promote innovation and research in the field of eportfolio and eportfolio-related technologies and practices.

To accomplish its mission, the signatories of the Europortfolio Charter have agreed to work together towards:

  • Establishing a European network of eportfolio practitioners, professionals and organisations;
  • Mobilising the human, financial, operational and technical resources required to achieve its mission and create the conditions for a self-sustainable organisation;
  • Maintaining a public knowledge base of eportfolio initiatives, technologies and practices;
  • Supporting research activities and the dissemination of research outcomes to the wider public;
  • Supporting continuing professional development through a community of practice;
  • Working with relevant initiatives, networks and organisations, in Europe and beyond.

Benefits for Signatories

When signing the Charter, a Signatory will be entitled to:

  • Contribute to the strategic direction of Europortfolio and influence future developments;
  • Receive support in establishing regional and national chapters;
  • Join special interest and working groups;
  • Have full access to the resources produced by the Europortfolio community;
  • Review and approve the Statutes and Bye-laws of the future Europortfolio Association;

After the incorporation of Europortfolio, the benefits for Europortfolio Members will be defined in the Europortfolio Statutes and Bye-Laws:


The leadership of the Europortfolio Charter is insured by:

  • The Steering Committee, leading the incorporation of Europortfolio
  • The Council of National Representatives, leading the work of special interest groups and working groups.

Until the incorporation of Europortfolio, the members of the Steering Committee and Council will be co-opted by the initiators of Europortfolio. After the incorporation, the leadership will be defined by the statutes and bye-laws voted by the Charter Signatories at the first Annual General Meeting.


The signing of this Charter does not constitute any legal rights or obligations other than those defined in this Charter. For organisational Signatories, the Charter should be signed on behalf of an organisation or company by an authorised representative.

The ePortfolio Field Coming of Age: Knowledge, Research and Practice

The eportfolio community is a major global learning movement. The use of electronic portfolios, as learning spaces, is roughly in its tenth year and, in honor of this anniversary, the 2013 Annual AAEEBL Conference in Boston highlights the phrase "Coming of Age." Therefore, this CFP invites proposals about using eportfolios to encourage deeper and more learner-centered practices. Six conference tracks represent a wide array of possibilities for sharing and discussing a multiplicity of eportfolio topics from start-ups to the latest innovations:

Digital Identities, Footprints and Networks

2013 Eportfolio Forum aims to support our digital identities, footprints and networks through eportfolio practice with a combination of presentations, workshops, 20×20 sessions, posters and facilitated conversations on Thursday 3 October.

This Forum will be complemented by Pre-Forum Workshops on Wednesday 2 October, from 9.30 am-12.30 pm & 1.30 pm-4.30 pm to allow new and experienced eportfolio supporters to gain some ‘hands-on’ experience with using eportfolios.  More information to follow.
