Open Passport: Open Trust for an Open Society

In January I asked is "2015, the Year of Trust?" We are pleased to inform you that this question has already received a positive response with the announcement of $1.2 million awarded to the winners of the Digital Media and Learning Trust Challenge. Our project the Open Badge Passport, one of the thirteen projects chosen, will be launched at ePIC 2015 to invite the participants to take an active role in its initial design.

The objective of the Open Badge Passport (#OpenPassport, http://www.openpassport.me) is to contribute to the reinvention of the ePortfolio by establishing a native, distributed, open trust infrastructure. One of the key ideas at its origin is the exploitation of the wealth of information contained in the global collection of Open Badges to provide new services to individuals and the community. Although this idea was discussed for a long time in the ePortfolio community, it never came to fruition; ePortfolios are still disconnected information silos; we intend to see that the Open Badge Passport succeeds where ePortfolios failed.

To address the issue of how (un)successful ePortfolios have been until now,  Europortfolio recently opened a conversation with the publication of the  ePortfolio Green Paper. The objective of this document is to critically review the achievements and shortcomings of ePortfolio practice an technologies.

If ePortfolios were such a wonderful thing, we should all have one, shouldn’t we?

The question above is the introductory question to a  series of challenging statements like: why ePortfolios have failed to change education? Who really benefits from the introduction of ePortfolios in an organisation? Who has the real ownership? Do we need ePortfolios to reflect? Under which conditions could the introduction of ePortfolios lead to learning innovation? Are Open Badges a nice add-on to ePortfolios or a means to reinvent ePortfolio technology and practice?

During 3 months, the ePortfolio Green Paper will be open to discussion, the outcome of which will be a white paper, i.e. policy recommendations. The results of this conversation will also be embedded in the Open Badge Passport which aims at bringing its contribution to the reinvention of ePortfolio practice and technology, in particular by exploiting the ability of Open Badges to create chains and networks of trust.

Open Badges are creating the conditions to move beyond ePortfolios as 'self-narrative silos', and towards ePortfolios as 'hubs of interwoven identities.'

ePIC 2015, will be more than a conference with interesting presentations. With the launch of Open Badge Passport (#OpenPassport) and the final touch to the ePortfolio Green paper, authors, presenters and delegates will have the opportunity to contribute to the production of tangible outcomes that should impact the future development of learning practice and technologies.

Open Badge Passport Workshop

The Open Badge Passport (#OpenPassport, http://www.openpassport.me) will be launched at ePIC 2015. During three days, delegates from all over the world will have the opportunity to actively contribute to the design of what we hope could provide the foundations for the reinvention of ePortfolio technology and practice, a need elicited in the ePortfolio Green Paper. Will the Open Badge Passport be a disruptive technology? It is for you to decide!

About the Open Badge Passport

The Open Badge Passport (Open Passport, for short)  is an open source, open data and open trust project. It is vital to its success that the community as a whole, not just a small groups of specialists, contributes to its design. While we will of course need technical experts when the time comes to decide which technology to choose and to write pieces of code, the initial design of the overall architecture and ecosystem will be accessible to all.

Some of the initial principles at the heart of the Open Passport are:

  • The passport belongs to the individual and its content is under the full control of its owner
  • The passport stores Open Badges and any other kind of data (documents, xAPI statements, etc.)
  • The passport provides an interface between a data repository (badges, etc.) and external services (authoring, educational, social networking, employment, etc.)
  • Adding services to the passport should be as easy as adding an app to a smartphone or tablet

Workshop activities

The objective of the workshop is to review the initial principles and design ideas to produce a blueprint of the Open Passport architecture and ecosystem. The activities the participants will be invited to contribute to:

  • Projection: imagine that everybody had an Open Passport with thousands of different Open Badges (and other data), what kind of services could be provided?
  • Review: are the initial principles and design ideas valid? Are there alternatives? Are there similar developments in other sectors we could learn from / join?
  • Design: what are the minimum functionalities required in the passport? How do passports interact with others and the rest of the world?
  • Planning: which resources do we need? Which actors should we involve?

This is just an initial proposal that will be adjusted during the following weeks. The timing of the workshop will also take into account the other conference activities, so that everybody will have a chance to contribute to the workshop and attend the rest of the programme.

Badge Europe is inviting contributions to two activities:

Open Badges use cases

Use cases are short narratives describing different situations and processes related to the exploitation of Open badges. The objective of these narratives is to inform the design of the Open Badge Infrastructure. Current use cases include:

  • Migrant Skilled Worker
  • Member of a Working Group
  • Collaborative design of badges
  • Open Badges in schools and higher education
  • Building a portfolio from badges
  • Using badges as a way to express social or political statements
  • Badge application for recognition of prior learning
  • Badges created and managed in one place then issued in several systems

Open Badges and Quality Management

 Open Badges for Quality or Quality for Open Badges? It is something entirely different to explore how Open Badges could transform our current approaches to quality management, using badges as transformative agents, than looking at how to apply current quality management techniques to Open Badges. The discussion is open and you are welcome to join and contribute to the conversation.

 

 

Join the Open Badge Passport Initiative

 

Until now, one way to describe the ultimate stage of the Open Badge workflow is "spray and pray": one collects Open Badges in ones backpack, "spray" them on their social networks, personal sites, résumés or ePortfolios then "pray" that a "consumer" will show some interest. Until now, the only type of "consumer" that has been considered is a person or the representative of an institution, e.g. an employer, the person in charge of accreditation of prior learning, etc. 

What the Open Badge Passport will do is bring in another type of "consumer": web services.  Contrary to a person that might be able to "consume" only a handful of badges or ePortfolios for his/her own good, a web service can "consume" (harvest) millions of badge metadata and provide in return many different services to their owners and their audiences. For example, a web service could connect the services provided by a self-employed person with the needs or potential customers. Another web service could display the competencies and talents flourishing in city as an incentive for creative people to relocate or an entrepreneur to set-up a business. As the number of potential services is unlimited, instead of defining the passport as a limited set of services,it is defined as an aggregator of services exploiting and nurturing the data collected in our Open Passports.

What the Open Badge Passport will also offer is implementing the ideas developed for some time now by the VRM community (Vendor Relationship Management). The main idea of VRM is to reverse the relationship of current CRM (Customer Relationship Management) so that instead of a client having to register with 10 different service providers (each keeping their own record over which we have no control) it is the vendor who registers with the clients who maintain full control over their data.

Replace the 'V' of Vendor in VRM with the 'T' of Trust, and you have what the Open Badge Passport aims at being: a Trust Management System — one early formulation of the Open Badge Passport in 2013 was the Open Trust Box.

What kind of services will emerge from the Open Badge Passport trust ecosystem? To find the answer to this question the Open Badge Passport initiative is inviting the community of practitioners, researchers , software developers and citizens to answer the following challenge:

Imagine that everybody had an Open Badge Passport containing thousands of Open Badges collected over a period of time, imagine that every Passport owner could open their data to services they trust, what kind of services do you imagine would be possible and what could their impact be?

Join the conversation on the ePortfolio Green Paper

If ePortfolios were such a wonderful thing, we should all have one, shouldn’t we? Why isn’t it the case? What does it say about the state of the art of learning and technologies? Is it because the technology is not mature enough? Is it because the learning environment, especially the formal one, is not conducive to ePortfolio practice? Are Open Badges a nice add-on to ePortfolios or a means to reinvent ePortfolio technology and practice?

To explore these questions, and more, the Europortfolio team invites the community to contribute to the collective authoring of a Green Paper (link) that will be discussed during ePIC 2015.

The Green Paper will be written collaboratively over 4 months (March 2015- June 2015). It will use 3 documents:

Complex Changes, Accelerated Transformations

The landscape of learning in the past few years has been changing substantially.

The ever-improving performance of mobile devices and the development of networking infrastructure continue to increase the appeal of new powerful instruments. The rapid spread of technologies, reflected in their untameable demand and use, the momentous development of research as well as practices inevitably transform the information society - mostly outside of institutional settings and often along unexpected pathways.

Whilst there is growing public interest and high demand worldwide for knowledge and education, and intensive social media movements are experienced both on the provider and user communities’ side, the issue of skills deficit is contributing to the critical public approach.

What the Society Would Expect

The increased amount and improved quality of new digital content in learning are furthering rapid transformation of user habits and the social impact of new technologies. The re-interpretation of the terms 'openness', 'resource management' and 'IPRs' have also altered socio-economic and cultural aspects considerably.

The movement for openness of learning content and courseware is pushing a paradigm change and a need for new approaches in using ICT. New educational business models and stakeholder alliances emerge, supported by fresh social and economic demands and clusters of interest. The emergence of low cost models in education warns all sectors, particularly universities.

All of this places new challenges on the educational system. The education and training sector needs to improve its effi ciency by scaling up innovative solutions to better meet the current requirements of society.

The focus of AAEEBL 2015 will target learning cultures through eportfolios use to assure a good fit with evidence gained from personalized learning and assessed holistically.

The goal of AAEEBL 2015 is to address three key targets for transformation that, if put into practice with eportfolios, can ease this tipping point in order to assure quality and recognize a variety of learning needs:

  •     Holistic Assessment
